Palinca

(pălincă)

Pălincă (Romanian) is a traditional fruit spirit (or fruit brandy) in Central Europe, known under several names. Historically originated in territories belonging to former Kingdom of Hungary and was invented during the Middle Ages. While palinca may be made of any locally grown fruit, the most common ones are: plums, apricots, apples, pears, and cherries.

Similar spirits exist in the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia known as Pálenka. In Romania it's known under the name Pălincă. In Hungary Pálinka is a EU registered local speciality.
